I think if we want to prepare for a culture in which technology, robotics, automation and computers will be ubiquitous in our lives, we should start by becoming accustomed to how they operate and what language they speak. The language of computers is programming, and there is a clever little company who has built toys for children to introduce them to programming and help them learn the language of the future.
I know that growing up in Southern California, knowing even just a little Spanish helped me in countless situations. When I went to Italy, I learned some very basic Italian and found I had a resource if I needed to problem solve on the fly. Hell, even knowing a little about cars helped me over the years. I never felt utterly helpless when confronted with a mechanical problem. I could at least make an educated guess as to what was important and what was not. Learning programming will instill a basic understanding of how just about everything will operate in the future. All computers use the same basic language and when you use it, you empower yourself.
The robots may take our jobs…but someone has to fix the robot, right?
